In September 2004 the FDA issued a public recommendation that Merck, the company that manufactures Fosamax®, revise the product's label to include a warning about the increased risk of osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ) for those taking Fosamax®. Osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ) is a condition where disruption of the jaw bone's blood supply results in bone death in the lower jaw. Some of the symptoms that accompany ONJ include tooth loss, bone exposure, bacterial infection, rotting of mouth tissue, and severe facial pain. Because of Merck's failure to adequately warn doctors and the public of potentially serious Fosamax® side effects, more than 2,400 individuals have contracted this potentially disfiguring disorder. Fosamax®, a member of a class of bone resorption drugs called bisphosphonates, is an effective, but highly acidic treatment for osteoporosis. As a result of the drug's acidity, some users may experience severe gastrointestinal problems including stomach upset, stomach ulcers, inflammation, and in some cases erosion of the esophagus lining. The risk of gastrointestinal complications increases sharply when a patient does not remain upright for 30 minutes after taking Fosamax®, or ingests any food, beverage, medicine, or nutritional supplement during this 30 minute interval. FDA clinical trials have revealed that Fosamax® users may also experience serious, and in some cases debilitating, bone pain. Fosamax® can also hinder proper functioning of the kidneys.
